Countdown to UFC On Versus: Vera vs. Jones… Watch it after the jump…
Has BJ Penn basically cleaned out the UFC Lightweight division? Apparently Dana White thinks so. On his website, BJPenn.com, the UFC Lightweight champ said that Dana has talked to him about moving from 155 to 170 by the end of the year:
“Dana has expressed some things to me that he would want to see this year, maybe me in the welterweight division. We will see. I have got a tough fight with Frankie Edgar coming up. [And] there is always good lightweight talent, there is a bunch of welterweight contenders up there. I guess I would just have to say I don’t have my mind set on anything yet…. I don’t want to jump the gun and give away all Dana’s plans!..read what else Penn said after the jump…
To say that UFC 104 left a lot of people with a bad taste in their mouth is an understatement–not me though because Lyoto is my boy and I’m ok that he still has the belt–deal with it, folks. Anyways, Shogun is starting to speak and he knows that this fight will be much different from the first one.
While it may not have been as exciting as WEC events in the past, WEC 47 was still pretty entertaining.
Dominick Cruz danced his way to victory: I was very dizzy after watching Cruz faint, bounce and constantly change angles for two rounds and it seemed Brian Bowles was too. Cruz showed exactly how you beat someone with serious knockout power. You don’t stop moving till the fight is over. The only thing Cruz lacks in his arsenal of tricks is KO power but that shouldn’t stop him from holding onto the WEC Bantamweight belt for a while.
What failed Brian Bowles more, his hand or his head? Bowles’s problem with his right hand has been well documented. So it was no surprise that he broke it again this weekend against Cruz. What was surprising is that was the reason the fight was stopped. Now, I have no idea what it is like to fight with a broken hand or can even being to understand the amount of pain Bowles may have been in, but we have seen time and time again fighters fighting through injures that occur during a bout. Hell, Urijah Faber broke both his hands his rematch with Mike Brown and still managed to go the distance. So, the question needs to be asked, was Bowles not mentally tough enough to fight through adversity?

At the end of 2009, things were looking up for Scott Coker and Strikeforce. They were just coming off a year where they managed to sign, arguably, the best fighter in the world in Fedor Emelianenko, held their first successful event on CBS in November and “stole” Dan Henderson away from the UFC. Their momentum heading into 2010 was undeniable.
Then 2010 started. Strikeforce’s first big event in 2010, “Strikeforce Miami”, was far from being successful. While the TV ratings were respectable (half million viewers), the attendance numbers were terrible and the amount of merchandise sold at the event was even worse. Remember, Strikeforce isn’t making bank on their deal with Showtime, they make the majority of their money on revenue from tickets and merchandise sold at the live events. The is part of the reason why Dan Henderson signed with Strikeforce. So, he could sell his Clinch Gear MMA clothing line at Strikeforce events (the UFC ban his line).
To make matters worse for Strikeforce in 2010, their big star, Fedor Emelianenko and his management company, M-1 Global, have decided to play hardball by trying to renegotiate his contract. While both sides continue say nothing is wrong, Fedor, Strikeforce’s biggest draw, is not going to be appearing on their next event on CBS on April 17th. He may not even appear on their fight card in May versus Fabricio Werdum after a report came out today that Fedor re-injured his hand during training and may be out even longer.
So, you may be asking yourself, why will this effect Strikeforce’s deal with CBS? Lack of Fedor equals lower ratings. Dan Henderson is a great fighter, but there is no way a title bout between him and Jake Shields is going to even come close to pulling the same ratings as Fedor’s last fight with Brett Rogers. This is making CBS very worried about continuing to put Strikeforce events on their network, especially if it is taking the spot of a show that continues to pull sold ratings for the network. Yahoo! Sports breaks down why CBS may pull the plug after the jump….
